Raven Excels in Community, Faith and Accounting

The Gregorian Fellows leadership program at Benedictine College is designed to train and launch Catholic leaders rooted in their faith and ready to be effective in contemporary society. The work of the Fellows his featured here every Friday. Today, we wanted to share a few things the Gregorian Fellows participate in.

Sabrina Poston from Normal, Ill., is a December graduate of Benedictine College, a Double Major in Accounting and Finance.

As a Gregorian Fellow, she committed herself to the college’s mission of community, faith and scholarship: She sang in the choir, marched for life and attended a Notre Dame conference, and served as an Economics Department Teacher Assistant at Benedictine.

Poston also recently finished a stint as an Audit Intern for Ernst and Young in Des Moines, Iowa.

She “went through three different interviews,” to land the internship, she said. “I applied in Iowa as I have family there and the financial sector of the firm intrigued me as I could use my finance major in addition with my accounting major.”It was extremely difficult in the beginning, she said. “I had no idea what I was doing with the work and was afraid that I was not going to be a good accountant. However, I pushed through these fears, learned the tricks of the trade, and became rather comfortable and confident with the work I was doing.”

She said she was pleasantly surprised by the experience. “We were treated as employees rather than interns,” she said. “We were not given small tasks but rather real work that other employees were doing. I appreciated the extra challenge and responsibility.”

The experience taught her how to problem-solve and “figure out what I can on my own before asking for help. …  I was not afraid to ask for help; I just wanted to learn, be considerate, and do my job well. As a leader, these are all important points to keep in mind.”

“The high point of my experience was the people I worked with. I made great friends during my internship and they helped to make the accounting work which can be dry at times not so dry.”
