Engineers’ Summer Projects Make a Difference

The Gregorian Fellows Leadership Program at Benedictine College promotes Catholic identity in public life by forming a new generation of leaders who unite faith and reason in their work. On Fellows Fridays, the Gregorian Institute will introduce you to some of these extraordinary students.

Lindsey Bottom is doing research at the University of North Dakota for the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Departments this summer.

Bottom is a Chemistry and Chemical Engineering major from the class of 2020.

“My specific project uses analytical chemistry to investigate potential applications for lignin, a waste product in the paper manufacturing industry,” she said. “This program involves sustainability and I felt that the project’s aims supported my desire to use the skills I learn in chemical engineering to make a difference in the places I am passionate about.”

“Seeing techniques learned in class for actual research has improved my understanding,” she said. “I was surprised to find out how much of learning requires hands on experience.  I’ve learned that attention to detail, organization, honesty, and patience play an equal if not more essential role in science than knowledge.”

Joe Tynan is a civil engineering intern at CORE Consultants in Denver this summer.

Tynan is a Civil Engineering major from the class of 2020. Core Consultants specializes in civil engineering in land development, and has a natural resources team and a surveying team.

“CORE is an awesome place to work for because the culture of the company places an emphasis on employees being dedicated to their families and their communities,” says Tynan. “I have learned a lot about AutoCad Civil 3D, and I am surprised by how much I enjoy the 8 am – 5 pm work schedule.”

Tynan is pictured with his Core team, partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver earlier this month in their Swansea Homes neighborhood in Denver helping families “build strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable housing.”
