Archdiocese and College Promote ‘Must-See’ Film

The Archdiocese of Kansas City-Kansas is going all out to promote the movie Unplanned, about the conversion of a Planned Parenthood clinic manager to one of the nation’s leading pro-life activism.

Benedictine College has rented a theater for a special preview showing of the movie before its official March 29 release — but the Archdiocese is also stressing that it is important to buy a ticket for the movie on March 29, to improve its initial box-office, which will keep it in theaters longer.

Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann will watch the film with Benedictine College students at the theater the college rented.

The movie tells the story of Abby Johnson, who worked at Planned Parenthood because she was dedicated to its stated mission of helping women. However, once she worked for the organization she learned that its business model meant her job was to increase the number of abortions.

One day, she was called in from her administrative position to assist with an abortion.

“I had never seen an ultrasound-guided abortion before,” she said in interviews.

What she saw on the screen changed everything she believed. She had been told that unborn children were incapable of feeling pain. The screen clearly showed that this was not true. How she dealt with that realization and the obstacles she faced is the topic

Archbishop Naumann, responsible for the college’s Archdiocese, has become a big promoter of the film.

Debra Niesen, the archdiocesan pro-life consultant, described how Archbishop Naumann, who is also chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, became a promoter of the  event.

“We screened it here at the chancery” three months ago, said Niesen. “After seeing it, the archbishop knew that this was going to be a very important pro-life film. And so, in his homily during the vigil Mass for the March for Life in Washington, D.C., he said, ‘If you see one film this year, you should see Unplanned.’”

“I think ‘Unplanned’ is a story about conversion, a story about redemption,” said Archbishop Naumann. “Abby is a Saint Paul for the pro-life movement today, and her story has the power to open hearts, change minds and inspire people.

“I pray that many will see it and be influenced by it.”
